ബീഹാര്‍ യാത്ര (part 2)

She must be 30 years old…

Got married at an age of 16 or 17, she doesn’t really remember…

Her husband had to migrate from their village in Bihar, in search of work, and is somewhere in Punjab now…

When I met her, she was carrying and that was the 3rd month of pregnancy… This being her fifth pregnancy…

Only two of her children are alive… the other two didn’t even survive till their first birthday..

Her third child, a baby girl, succumbed to typhoid, and the fourth- a boy- she still doesn’t know why he died…

Her eyes were yellowish, and I was told she is having jaundice… and that she is a TB patient…

Did u go to the PHC??

No, my mother-in-law will not allow that; I don’t know where the PHC is.. they say it is not open always… and that they don’t have medicines, and I will have to buy it from outside… and they give the same tablets for all kind of ailments…

Do you know what HIV Aids is??? ……………………………………!!!!

Airtel signals can reach this village…

Pepsi, Cola and Thumbs up can reach this village…..

But government services cannot…

The Anganwadi centre opens once in a blue moon…

The PHC is open – but NO doctors, No medicines….

I am just not able to forget her…and the expression on her face..

നിസ്സംഗത ... അതോ നിസ്സഹായതയോ ???
